Everybody wants healthy hair and many spend quite a bit of money to help maintain it. But, few of us know how what we eat and apply topically can play an enormous role in determining our hair’s quality and health.
One of the most effective and natural products to help prevent hair loss and promote hair growth is green tea extract.
Green tea is a type of tea that is made from camellia sinensis leaves and buds that have not undergone the same withering and oxidation process used to make ooling teas and black teas. Green tea originated in China, but its production and manufacture have spread to other countries in East Asia.
Several varieties of green tea exist, which differ substantially based on the variety of camellia sinensis used, growing conditions, horticultural methods, production processing, and time of harvest.
Green tea is safe and effective and can play an important role in maintaining healthy and strong hair. As described below, multiple studies have established that, when applied topically, green tea extract, can meaningfully reduce hair loss, promote hair regrowth, and even slow down the graying of hair.
Does Green Tea Extract Help Block DHT?
Caffeine found in green tea is proven in studies to prevent hair loss by blocking the hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). This hormone is one of the primary causes of male pattern hair loss in men and women.
The antioxidants and phytochemicals in green tea also inhibit the production as well as the conversion of testosterone into DHT.
In addition, vitamin C and polyphenols in green tea help prevent dullness while improving hair shine and softness.
Does green tea make hair grow faster?
Green tea extract also supports healthy hair growth.
In one study, researchers added green tea extract derived from EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) to the scalps of three participants with pattern hair loss. All of the participants experienced considerable increases in hair growth activity after only seven days.
EGCG present in green tea appears to increase hair growth by preventing skin and hair cells from becoming damaged, stimulating hair follicles, and boosting the blood circulation towards the scalp.
Flavanoids
Green tea contains compounds known as polyphenols and flavonoids. Flavonoids give green tea some of its health benefits as an antioxidant and anti-carcinogen. Something else unique to green tea is its abundance of carotenoids (Vitamin A), tocopherols (Vitamin E), ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), Zinc, and Selenium.
These properties are all known to prevent hair loss and even promote the regrowth of hair.
How can you use green tea for hair loss?
Given the growth-stimulating properties of green tea and its extracts, they are included as the main ingredient in many hair care products.
Hair Restoration Laboratories‘ Hair Restore Shampoo and Conditioner Set is an example of a product that can be used daily to expose your hair follicles to the benefits of green tea extract. Both contain the extract in its “DHT Halting Technology®”, which is a collection of vitamins, extracts, amino acids, and antioxidants clinically proven to help block DHT, stop hair loss and stimulate hair follicles to grow new hair.
Take Away
Green tea extract is packed full of antioxidants, polyphenols, phytochemicals, caffeine, and free-radical scavengers. Multiple studies confirm that applying it directly to your hair and scalp will help prevent male and female pattern hair loss and even promote hair growth.
